A tragic head-on collision near the Lawrence-Crawford County line on Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of two Illinois men and remains under active investigation by authorities.
According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 4:18 p.m. on Illinois Route 1, roughly half a mile north of the Lawrence-Crawford County line. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision.
Investigators said a southbound 2014 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 20-year-old Kaden Meek of Lawrenceville, crossed the center line for reasons that have not yet been determined. The vehicle collided head-on with a northbound 2019 Ford Fusion operated by 35-year-old Braden Doersam of Robinson.
The impact caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles. Braden Doersam was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders. Kaden Meek sustained critical injuries and was transported from the crash site by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts to save him, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities reported that both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were removed from the scene by tow services. Due to the severity of the crash, an Illinois State Police Accident Reconstructionist was called to assist investigators in determining the factors that led to the collision.
At this time, officials have not released a definitive cause of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine evidence and reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy.
Illinois Route 1 was closed for approximately four hours while emergency personnel worked at the scene and investigators processed the area.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford County Rescue, Flat Rock Area Fire Protection District, Illinois Department of Transportation, and Illinois State Police.
As family members, friends, and community residents mourn this heartbreaking loss, many are remembering the lives of Kaden Meek and Braden Doersam while awaiting further information from investigators regarding the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
