A Cook County jury has convicted a Chicago security guard in the fatal shooting of an unarmed passenger aboard a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Red Line train, a case that has drawn significant public attention and renewed concerns about transit safety in Chicago, Illinois.
The jury deliberated for approximately three hours before finding 30-year-old Issac Anderson guilty of the murder of 60-year-old Oral Woods, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Anderson now faces a possible sentence ranging from 48 years to life in prison. He has been ordered to remain in custody at the Cook County Jail pending further proceedings.
Prosecutors presented surveillance footage and transit records that detailed the events leading up to the October 15, 2022, shooting. According to evidence shown at trial, the encounter began after both men boarded a southbound Red Line train at the State-Lake station. They traveled together for roughly 30 to 40 minutes without incident.
The situation escalated when Anderson approached Woods, sat beside him, and searched through his backpack. He removed a can of soda, returned to his seat, drank from it, and then went back and poured the remaining contents onto Woods.
Witness footage showed Woods standing with his hands visible and unarmed when Anderson pulled a revolver from his jacket and fired five shots, striking him. Woods later died from his injuries.
After the shooting, Anderson fled the train at the 87th Street station. He was initially encountered by police on a CTA bus but released after no weapon was found. Investigators later used surveillance video and Ventra card data to track and arrest him days later near the same area.
Authorities also presented evidence that Anderson had legally purchased firearms prior to the incident, along with digital communications referencing gun use. The defense noted he had no prior criminal record and had worked as a security guard for approximately one year.
Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke stated that the verdict reinforces the importance of safety on public transit and accountability for violent acts. Officials continue to encourage riders to remain alert and use emergency systems when necessary.
Oral Woods is being remembered as the victim of a senseless act of violence, with his death serving as a reminder of ongoing concerns about safety in public spaces.
